West End Boomerang Bags
Overwhelmed by plastic pollution? Love zero-waste solutions?
Boomerang Bags is a grassroots, community driven movement, empowering local communities to address plastic pollution at the source. The boomerang bag movement has seen 205603 bags produced from 860 communities around the world. This has saved over 62,000kg of fabric waste from landfill.
The West End Boomerang Bags group takes fabric waste from locals (material, tablecloths, sheets, shirts), and up-cycles it into re-usable, zero-waste shopping bags (Boomerang Bags)!
We hold sewing workshops once a month, usually at the South Brisbane Sailing Club hall in Orleigh park.
But there’s a problem
We've been working hard to collect waste and create bags in West End for almost a year. To make more boomerang bags, we need to hire a suitable space, and unfortunately this costs money. We are grateful to have been gifted second hand sewing machines, however we also require additional equipment such as cutters and screen printers to continue.
We need your help to cover costs, so we can continue to make bags for West End in 2019. With some extra resources, we can collect more fabric waste, cut and sew faster, and create more boomerang bags!
This will allow us to spread these zero-waste bags around shops in 4101. Wouldnt you just love a stand of boomerang bags at our local coles or Aldi!
You can help us!
Any donation will help our cause. For example:
- $50 covers our venue hire for one month. We need this space to create bags.
- With $150 we can buy a screen printing kit for the bags.
- With $12.50 we can buy boomerang bag labels.
Your donations help us SEW MORE BAGS FOR WEST END. More bags for West End means LESS PLASTIC!
You can also volunteer with us by coming along to our workshops, to cut, iron, or sew boomerang bags. For more information, visit our facebook page.
Plastic Free West End
West End Boomerang Bags is an initiative of Plastic Free West End. We've been working with West End businesses and the community, to phase out the most common single use plastics.
Plastic Free West End is a community plan seeking to reduce the use of the six most common single use plastic packaging items in West End by 50%, by June 2020. The plan involves local businesses (specifically hospitality and retail), community groups, event organisers and individuals. This plan is based on a successful model developed by the Boomerang Alliance, which has been implemented in Noosa, Byron Bay and Wollongong.
The program is focused on reducing the six most common single use plastic items. Alternatives to these items are readily available.
The 6 plastic items include:
- coffee cups
- food ware/cutlery
- bottles; and
