Mutual Aid / Disaster Relief Fund
New York City is currently the epicenter of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Although we are one of the most diverse and vibrant communities in the US, COVID has exacerbated existing vulnerabilities and inequalities on the Rockaway Peninsula. Almost one in three East Rockaway households have a total annual income of under $25,000 and 34% of children live below the poverty level. Before COVID the unemployment rate was a high 14% – almost double the national average. A USDA-declared food desert, the Rockaways have a uniquely vulnerable population with the highest concentration of nursing facilities, public housing, and group homes in NYC.
As one of the hardest hit areas by Hurricane Sandy, our community realized the critical importance of mutual aid in surviving emergencies. At this time more than ever we must turn to our community networks for solidarity and collective care.

What we're using these funds for
Many of our community members are home-bound, social distancing, or self-quarentining in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. While necessary to slow the spread of the virus, these social distancing measures have had an inevitable economic impact on all of us, hitting the most vulnerable the hardest. Rockaway Mutual Aid is a network for community members to support one another through a reciprocal exhancge of resources and services. Funds are being raised both inside and outside the community to support our most vulnerable community members.
Your donation will go towards reimbursing a community volunteer for the purchase and delivery of groceries, medicines and basic supplies. Volunteer reimbursements are provided on a first-come first-serve basis, are capped at $100, and require a receipt for documentation.
Rockaway Mutual Aid is 100% volunteer run. Beyond donating we are always in need of additional volunteers to support deliveries and connect community members to critical resources.
