A little bit of context
Atiba Nunnally, TU Class of 2001 has partnered with Project Backboard to renovate Tuskegee University's outdoor basketball courts located at the center of campus behind TU's Chapel. The renovations will revitalize a nostalgic part of the campus and create a functional and meaningful place for the next generation of Tuskegee University students to enjoy.
But there’s a problem
TU's outdoor basketball courts are in need of a significant renovation and improvement, and these improvements are long overdue. These campus resources create a space for students to relax and connect with one another. Having an updated space to play on these courts would add tremendous value to the experience of current and future TU students.
Here’s what we’re doing about it
In partnership with TU's Student Government Association, Project Backboard, and alumnus Atiba Nunnally, the plan to paint the courts with a design that represents Tuskegee University's rich history and impact on the world. One of the anchors of this project is enlisting the help of current students to paint the design onto the courts. Reminiscent of students making the bricks in the early days of Tuskegee University's origin that can still be found on campus today.
And how it’s going to change the world
By providing students the opportunity to participate in this project and the use of courts that represent their history, it will instill a sense of pride in their TU experience and pride in future students yet to arrive on campus. This is one of the unique benefits of attending a Historically Black College or University. Let's do our part to build future alumni of Tuskegee University whose sense of themselves and their history lead to greater success and impact on the world today and beyond.
