Let's face it – environmental laws in Queensland have never been perfect. But in the past few years the former state government drove them far, far backwards. Now we have a fresh government, a government who has made promises of reform. A window is open to repair Queensland's weakened environmental laws, but that window might shut soon. It is urgent that we act now!
In the lead up to the state election, Environmental Defenders Office Queensland stood up for your environmental rights and made a number of requests to all political parties. The incoming government came back to us with a number of promises, including:
- promises to improve laws to protect the Great Barrier Reef;
- promises to restore community objection rights to new mines;
- promises to override unfair water laws and reinstate vegetation management laws;
- promises to fully assess water impacts from proposed Galilee Basin coal mines; and
- promises to return funding to EDOs.
Now we must follow through and see the promises are met. But we need your help!
As an independent, non-profit community legal centre that lost all government funding, we rely solely on your donations to exist.
We need funds for staff wages, rent, internet, and telephone - the basic essentials to continue our law reform work. This will ensure we can keep on standing up for stronger laws to protect and conserve our environment, draft submissions and template submissions, continue to appear at committee hearings, and continue to meet with ministers and department staff to ensure the environment gets a fair go!
Our lawyers are
experts in Queensland environmental law. We know the law. We know its strengths. We know its weaknesses. Former Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus QC MP agrees:
"Community legal organisations including Environmental Defenders Offices have played an integral role in the struggle for justice in this country for decades … The extensive experience of these organisations at the very front line of service delivery means that they are often able to provide unique insights and contributions to policy development in their areas of expertise."
In the past we have successfully achieved changes to both state and federal laws through the law reform process. We have the skills and experience needed to work with the new Queensland State Government to draft proposed changes and to keep up the pressure to transform the system.
Please join me in reshaping Queensland's weakened environmental laws by making a tax-deductible donation to this special end of financial year appeal.
Environmental Defenders Office (Qld) Inc
PS. The reality is, the change in government provides a very promising window to reshape Queensland's weakened environmental laws, but we must act now! Before 30 June, please help us reach our target of $120,000 by making a donation to Environmental Defenders Office Queensland.
